Listen Up

The sound of the world is all around us.

In a time of climate change, where environmental impact is taking place all around us, it is important to understand our place and role in the health of our environment. Environmental listening is a unique opportunity to be here, now. To be truly present in the place in which we live, and to contemplate its richness, it's diversity and its fragility. We truly believe that through changing the way we listen, we can change the way we are in the world, and subsequently change our impact upon the environments of which we are part

Biophony consists of the Greek prefix, bio, meaning life, and the suffix, phon, meaning sound, and is used in Acoustic Ecology to describe the collective sound that vocalizing animals create in each given environment.

Geophony, from the Greek prefix, geo, meaning earth-related, and phon, meaning sound, is used in Acoustic Ecology to describe one of three possible sonic components of a soundscape. It relates to the naturally occurring non-biological sounds coming from different types of habitats, whether marine or terrestrial.

Anthrophony, from the Greek prefix, anthro, meaning man, or human, and phon, meaning sound, is used in Acoustic Ecology to describe any of the possible sonic components of a soundscape generated by humans.

Who we are

At Community Environmental Listening, we're not just passionate about preserving our planet, but also about building a community that cares deeply about creating a sustainable future.

Join us as we embark on a journey where every small action makes a big difference, and let's work together to protect and nurture our environment for generations to come.

Each of us holds the power to influence change - individual action bound in communal action is the most powerful way to achieve change.

As an Environmental Listener, on a daily basis, we can take collective action to deepen our environmental awareness – awareness of the places in which we live, the impact we have on them, and the transformations we observe. Here and now. This is a catalyst for change.

Environmental Listening is a simple tool that can profoundly strengthen these very sensibilities.

The Community Environmental Listening initiative is the first step in building a national and international practice of environmental listening. We envision, that over time, the local groups that gather to practice environmental listening will form a sense of community through their careful attention to the sonic qualities of the world around them. We will each feel more situated in the places we live, and more attentive to its diversity and fragility. We will build environmental stewardship and agency. Furthermore, we hope that over time these communities will interact to form a global community of environmental listeners. We are stronger together and change must come from all of us.

FAQs

  • This community driven initiative provides training in 3 listening modes - Passive, Directed and Active listening. When you practice these listening modes, directing your attention to the sounds of the environment in which you live, you will develop a stronger connection to your ecosystem and to the community of which you are part.

  • We are happy to support you through training - in person or on-line and in addition we have published the Community Environmental Listening Fieldguide which is available for purchase on this site. Your purchase goes directly towards keeping the project alive and printing more copies of the field guide.

  • That is our mission - to train community members to run regular meetup groups in their local communities - to spread the power of listening across the country and the globe. Help us achieve 1 billion people listening to their local environment by 2050

  • In our busy urban lives we loose connection with the ecosystems of which we are a part. Environmental Listening re tunes us to those environments, helping us to develop stewardship and agency around our local conditions and through our collective actions, address climate impact from a grass roots movement.
